Assam stay at top in medal tally in 2nd North East Olympic Games

Assam made a giant leap in the medal tally and stayed at top with 64 medals on day IV in the 2nd North East Olympic Games in Shillong

GUWAHATI: Assam made a giant leap in the medal tally and stayed at top with 64 medals on day IV in the 2nd North East Olympic Games in Shillong on Sunday. Among the 64 medals 28 are gold, 21 silver and 15 are bronze medals. Manipur are placed at second place with 56 medals (21-17-18). Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya are at third andt fourth place with 29 (10-8-11) and 35 (4-12-20) medals respectively.

Assam won several medals today in various events which included Taekwondo, Shooting, Swimming, Golf, Wushu, Athletics and Judo. On the other hand, Arup Jyoti emerged as the fastest man in the game by picking gold medals in 100m.

Taekwondo: Assam bagged 19 medals in this event. In the junior category gold medals were won by Nayatri Chetia (U-52kg), Angshika Singh (U-49), Debashish Chetia (U-48) and Rahul Phukan (U-51kg). In the senior category Bansikha Barua gave gold medal to Assam in the women U-57 weight category.

Shooting: Shooters of Assam made a good show in the shooting range on Sunday and won 9 medals. Sidhanta Chatterjee (10m Rifle), Sreyashi Mazumdar (10m Rifle, women), Sreyasi and Naini and Sudipta Sarma (10m Rifle, women team), Sapan Sandhya (25m Pistol, women), Ambarish Bharadwaj (25m Pistol, Men), Men and women team (25m pistol, team event) won gold medals in the championship.

Swimming: Assam continued their good run in the swimming and collected seven medals on Sunday. Among the seven medals 4 are gold and those medals were won by Mixed Free Style Relay team (50m), Jananjoy Jyoti Hazarika (50m butter fly), Jhanabi Kashyap (50m butter fly, women) and Bandeep Medhi (100m back stroke, men).

Athletics: Athletes from Assam today picked up 9 medals which included four gold. The gold medals were collected by Manoj Swargiyari (Javelin, men), Arupjyoti (100m, men), Laiman (High Jump, men) and Madhurya Saikia (200m, men).

Wushu: Assam won 13 medals in Sanda and Taulu categories. Among the 13 medals 2 are gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze.
