NEW DELHI: Indian athletics chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair has confirmed that star sprinter Hima Das will not be able to participate in the upcoming Asian Games in China due to a hamstring injury she sustained in April.

"It is unfortunate she (Hima) was injured a day before the Indian Grand Prix IV in Bengaluru. She pulled a hamstring and also had back problem. Now, a medical investigation is going on and planning for treatment. I believe that she will not be able to participate in the Asian Games as per the policy of the AFI," Nair said.

Hima's injury had previously caused her to miss the Federation Cup in Ranchi last month. There were hopes that she would recover in time to participate in the National Inter-State Championship, which is the final selection event for the Hangzhou Asian Games.

However, her injury has not healed sufficiently, and she will be unable to compete.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had made it clear that all athletes, with the exception of those granted exemption, must participate in the National Inter-State Championship to be considered for the Asian Games. The championship is scheduled to begin in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. Agencies
