RIO DE JANEIRO: Atletico Mineiro secured their first Brazilian Super Cup title on Sunday by overcoming Flamengo 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Argentine playmaker Nacho Fernandez put Atletico ahead on the stroke of halftime before Gabriel Barbosa equalized with a 56th-minute strike.
Bruno Henrique gave Flamengo the lead by netting just after the hour mark, but Hulk put his side on level terms 15 minutes from time and the game was forced into a shootout.
Hulk converted his team's first and last spot kicks before Vitinho missed with Flamengo's 12th attempt of the shootout.
Atletico qualified for the fixture by winning both the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa do Brasil titles last year. Two-time Super Cup champions Flamengo earned a place by finishing second in the 2021 Serie A title race. Agencies
