RIO DE JANEIRO: This year's Copa America will be held in Brazil after Argentina and Colombia were dropped as co-hosts, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Monday.

The world's oldest continental football tournament will run from June 13 to July 10 after it was postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The 2021 Copa America will be played in Brazil. Tournament start and end dates are confirmed. The venues and the fixtures will be informed in the next few hours," CONMEBOL said in a brief statement.

The announcement came less than a day after CONMEBOL said Argentina would no longer stage Copa America matches because of surging coronavirus cases in the country.

Colombia was earlier stripped of its co-host status amid violent anti-government protests that have entered their second month.

It will be the sixth time that the Copa America is played in Brazil. Latin America's biggest country also hosted the tournament in 2019, when the hosts beat Peru 3-1 in the final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium. Agencies
