Men and Women Cricketers of India to Get the Same Match Fees

The members of the women's team often got much lesser resources and opportunities compared to their male counterparts.

MUMBAI: BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that the Indian women cricketers will get the same match fee as their male counterparts. On Thursday he mentioned this as the first step of the board towards tackling gender discrimination within the sport.

Jay Shah made this announcement in a series of tweets. He mentioned that the Indian cricket board is implementing a pay equity policy for all its contracted women players.

"I'm pleased to announce BCCI's first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket," Jay Shah tweeted.

"The BCCI Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind," the BCCI Secretary added.

This national team always faced problems regarding sponsorships and fee payments over the last few years.

Former captain of the Indian Cricket Team (Women), Mithali Raj welcomed this decision. She mentioned it to be a historic decision for women's cricket in the country. And that this pay equity policy along and the WIPL next year will usher in a new era in India for women's cricket. She also thanked the secretary and the board as a whole for this welcome step.

BCCI in its recently concluded 91st annual general meeting approved a Women's Indian Premier League (WIPL) from next year. India Women's Cricket team under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur claimed the Asia Cup trophy for the seventh time and also clinched a historic 3-0 ODI series against England.
