Ranji Trophy: Assam fail to take advantage from Riyan Parag's dashing knock

GUWAHATI: Assam failed to take advantage of all-round performance from Riyan Parag on day II in the Ranji Trophy tie against Hyderabad in Hyderabad today.

Hyderabad took a slender 3 runs first innings lead but Assam finished the day II scoring 182-6 in their second innings.

It was Riyan Parag who single handedly brought Assam on the track performing with bat and ball. The young spinner collected four wickets that helped Assam to restrict Hyderabad 208 in their first innings. Later, he scored 78 runs from 28 balls bulldozing Hyderabad's bowlers.

Riyan came into the bat when Assam were 29-2 and both the openers Rahul Hazarika (5) and Kunal Saikia (8) returned into the pavilion. Once he joined Rishav Das on the wicket the batter started to smash the bowlers at every corner of the park. Riyan hit eight boundaries and six over boundaries, most of those came from the bowling of Ajay Dev Goud (4X5, 6X2), in his short 28 balls knock. Rihsav contributed 34 before getting out. The duo on the third-wicket added 101 runs.

Swarupam Purkayastha (22no) and Akash Sengupta (4no) were on the wicket when the day's play came to an end.

Earlier, Hyderabad started the day's proceeding from their overnight score 78-3 and two not out batters K Rohit Reddy and Buddhi Rahul helped the side to make steady progress in the innings. However once Buddhi (35) got out on the bowling of Sunil Lachit Assam came back into the game and finished home team's first innings 208 even though the last wicket partnership between Bhagath Varma (46) ad Kartikeya Kak (4) contributed 37 runs. Rohit Rayudu (60) was the top scorer for Hyderabad. Among the bowlers of Assam Riyan (4-48), Mukhtar Hussain (3-62), Sunil Lachit (1-39) and Akash Sengupta (1-16) shared the 10 wickets among them.
