Ranji Trophy: Captain Riyan Parag keeps hopes alive vs Chhattisgarh

GUWAHATI: Captain Riyan Parag although played a captain’s knock, but Assam are struggling to save the season’s first game of the Ranji Trophy against Chhattisgarh at Raipur today. After following on, the visitors were 171-5 in their second inning and earned a slender 3-run lead at stumps on day III.

Riyan, who is in good form this season, came into bat when his team were 2-78. Both the openers Rishav Das (17) and Rahul Hazarika (39) already departed and later Assam lost the third wicket in the form of Ghadigaonkar (16) on the same total. But Riyan tried to repair the damage although he didn’t get too much support from the other end.

The right-handed batter today faced 40 balls to score an unbeaten knock of 82 runs with the help of seven boundaries and six over boundaries. His first fifty came in just 26 balls. The batter also added 58 runs with Bishal Roy on the fourth wicket. Rahul Hazarika (39) was the second-highest scorer in the team. JP Butte (2-35) came out with the best figure for Chhattisgarh in the second inning.

Earlier, Assam started the third day’s game with overnight score of 87-4 and were bowled out 159 in their first inning. Denish Das (52) scored a half-century and Akash Sengupta contributed 22 on the board. Tail enders didn’t disturb the scorer too much, as Assam lost three consecutive wickets on 140 and finally bowled out on 159. Sourabh Majumdar bagged 6-41 and he got good support from Ravi Kiran, 3-20.
