Ravichandran Ashwin Surpasses Harbhajan Singh To Become India's 3rd-Highest Wicket-Taker In Tests

In the second innings, he dismissed Kiwi openers Will Young just ahead of stumps on Day four, before dismissing Latham in the second session of the final day.

New Delhi: With 418 wickets, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday created history on the last day of the Test match against New Zealand as become India's third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Ashwin achieved this milestone in the second innings of longest format of the game by sending Tom Latham (52) to the pavilion. He surpassed veteran off-spinner Harbhajan, who has taken 417 Test wickets.

In the first innings, Ashwin had taken three wickets to take his tally of wickets to 416. In the second innings, he dismissed Kiwi openers Will Young just ahead of stumps on Day four, before dismissing Latham in the second session of the final day.

As compare to Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev have taken more wickets for India in theTest match. Kumble, the legendary leg-spinner, had registered 619 scalps in 132 Tests while the former Indian skipper, Kapil Dev, had scalped 434 wickets in 131 appearances.

India and New Zealand are facing each other in the first test match in Kanpur. The Indian team has set a target of 284 runs in front of New Zealand and in response the Kiwis have made 125 for 4 wickets till the tea break on the fifth day on Monday.

On Saturday, the Ashwin took his 415th wicket and with this he left behind Pakistan legend Wasim Akram in this matter.

So far in 2021, has taken 41 wickets and with this feat, he again left behind Pakistan's fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Notably, Ashwin had achieved this feat only in his 80th Test match. He has now reached number 14 in terms of taking the most wickets in Test cricket.

Ashwin made his Test debut in the year 2011 against West Indies. In his Test career, he took five wickets 30 times, while on the other hand has also taken 10 wickets for seven times in a test.
