We R North East, South Point make winning start

Guwahati: We R North East and South Point School won their respective matches in the inaugural edition of the TOPCEM-ASJA Inter-School and Academy Cricket tournament which got under way at the Nehru Stadium here today. In the first game of the day, WE R North East defeated Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre by 37 runs. The highlight of the match was two good knocks from Shreeraj Goenka (40no) and Prabal Kalita (40) which helped We R North East to post 148-5 in 20 overs. Later Prabal Kalita (4-23) and Aman Yadav (3-10) bowled two nice spells to restrict GCCC's total 111-9. M Madhurya Kashap (31) was the top scorer for GCCC.

In the other game of the day chasing 110 to win South Point School reached the target in 15.5 overs losing 5 wickets. Varun Jajodia (50) scored half century and his teammate Hridoy Raj Choudhury contributed 31 runs on the board. Anshu Chand Kaushik picked up 3-9 in his 3 overs spell. Earlier rode on a half century knock from Shibam Chetry (50) Fairyland School scored 109-7 in 20 overs.

Meanwhile the competition was inaugurated today at the Nehru Stadium in a brief function. The function was attended by renowned cricket coach Nabab Ali and three former first class cricketers Subhrajit Saikia, Zakaria Zuffri and Sajjad Zaheer Hussain.
