Durand Cup 2023: Guwahati and Kokrajhar Set to Host Asia's Oldest Football Tournament

GUWAHATI: Guwahati and Kokrajhar, two cities in the northeastern state of Assam, are brimming with excitement as they prepare to host the historic Durand Cup football tournament. Asia's oldest football tournament, the Durand Cup, is set to kick off on August 3, 2023, with Guwahati hosting nine matches, including a highly anticipated Northeast derby between local team Northeast United FC (NEUFC) and debutants Shillong Lajong.

The announcement was made by Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, representing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, at a grand ceremony held in a city hotel. Minister Gorlosa expressed her delight at the state's progress in sports and emphasized the positive impact of hosting premier national tournaments like the Durand Cup. Such events provide a significant boost to the young and talented footballers in Assam, allowing them to witness their favorite teams and players in action. Additionally, she extended a warm welcome to the foreign teams participating in the tournament and wished them a pleasant stay and success on the field.

Lt General RP Kalita, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the rich tradition of the Durand Cup, which has a longstanding association with the Indian Armed Forces.

Organized by the Indian Army on behalf of the three services, the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup is a highly anticipated event. It is the only cup tournament in India that features Service Teams alongside top teams from various divisions of Indian football. This year's tournament will witness the participation of 24 teams, including all 12 Indian Super League (ISL) sides. Notably, foreign teams from neighboring countries Bangladesh and Nepal will also compete, marking the return of foreign participation after a hiatus of 27 years.

The matches, including a quarter-final knockout game, will be held at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, with the finals scheduled to take place on September 3, 2023, in Kolkata. Kokrajhar, as the second venue from Assam, joins Guwahati in hosting the tournament, bringing top-tier national football to its picturesque surroundings. The enthusiasm among the residents of Kokrajhar is soaring, and under the capable leadership of Pramod Boro, the city is determined to leave a lasting impression.

The Durand Cup holds immense significance, not just for the participating teams but also for the football-loving community in Assam and beyond.
