ANKARA: From international organisations to countries, celebrities to commoners, everyone is trying to help the victims of the earthquake-devastated Turkey and Syria. Footballer Merih Demiral has announced the auction of the jersey of one of the most popular footballers of modern times towards the collection of finances for relief measures.

Former Juventus defender Merih Demiral took to tweeter to announce that he will be auctioning off a signed jersey of his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. And the funds collected from the auction of the jersey will go out to a local NGO which is working in the field of rescue and relief in the region. He mentioned that he had asked the football superstar regarding the auction.

"I just spoke with @Cristiano. He said that he was very sad about what happened in Turkey. We are auctioning Ronaldo's signed jersey in my collection. All proceeds from the auction will be used in the earthquake zone. The funds will be donated to @ahbap," Merih Demiral wrote in his local language on Twitter while sharing a photograph of the jersey.

Turkey and Syria were devastated by multiple high-intensity earthquakes on Monday. Official numbers point at about 6000 deaths in Turkey and 2500 more in Syria due to the eathquakes. The number of people injured due to damages of the tremours remains to be more than 15000 with an unknown number of people still stuck under the debris of damaged buildings.

100s of separate teams from multiple nations are working in multiple locations across both countries to rescue survivors. These teams comprise people with expertise in emergency response, medical departments as well as drilling equipment. Hundreds of rescue dogs have also been pressed into service by experts to find survivors. But the rains and the cold have been a hindrance to the rescue efforts as well as decreasing the possibility of survivors.
