DOHA (Qatar): Former England forward Wayne Rooney has not forgotten his infamous red card during the World Cup quarterfinal against Portugal in 2006, describing the incident as his "worst World Cup memory".
During the show on Sports18 and JioCinema, on being asked about a memory that he would like to forget from the World Cup, Rooney said, "I think for me it was in 2006, the red card against Portugal. I remember I was sitting in the dressing room after getting a red card. And I think if we lose in penalties, it is my fault and if we go through to the semifinal and final, I miss both games. It was definitely the worst feeling as a player, so definitely the red card in 2006."
After Rooney stamped on Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho in the quarterfinal in Germany, Ronaldo led the protests and was shoved by Rooney before the referee waved the red card in the 62nd minute.
The Portugal forward then appeared to wink at his country's coaches and substitutes on the bench. The English legend said that he too tried getting Ronaldo booked for diving during the match. Rooney also spoke about Ronaldo's famous wink from that match and said, "In football, we were teammates at Manchester United and in Portugal, he was a rival. I actually tried getting him booked for diving as well. So, I have no issues." (IANS)
