CHENNAI: India gave England a massive 317-run defeat in the second test match to level 1-1 in the four-match series.

Earlier, team India set a massive target of 482-runs and in turn, England just managed to 164 runs when the team was dismissed just after lunch on Day 4 in Chennai.

It is to be mentioned that India's roaring comeback was only possible because of the local lad Ravichandran Ashwin, who scored a century and picked up 8 wickets in the match, along with a belligerent ton from Rohit Sharma in the first innings.

Ashwin took the game away in the second innings with two clinical innings of the highest order. Ashwin's fifth Test hundred was the icing on the cake as India reworked its plans to torment England with a massive target on board.

Joe Root's men let themselves down once again with the willow as the Indian spinners grew in confidence to dismantle England early on in the chase on Day 3 before the obvious was set for Tuesday at the cauldron.

Notably, on a pitch that has been criticised for being a minefield, Ashwin showed that with the right technique and temperament, batsmen could shine, as he hit 13 boundaries and a six against England's bowling attack.

Ashwin's heroics saw India set England a target of 482 to win as the hosts look to level the four-match series.

On the other hand, debutant Axar Patel's precision was unmatched his fifer broke the English resistance without a sweat as India etched its biggest-ever win over England.

The next two matches will be played in Ahmedabad with the third Test being a day-night affair, to be contested from February 24.

India's win in the second Test ended England's winning run on foreign soil, having won their last six, including the first Test against India in Chennai.
