Indian Sportswoman Of The Year Award to be Declared in March

An iconic sportswoman will also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

NEW DELHI: Five prominent sports personalities of the country have been nominated for the next edition prestigious Indian Sports Woman of the Year award by BBC. This list includes Mirabai Chanu from Manipur as well.

The fourth edition of this award has Mirabai Chanu for weightlifting, Sakshee Malik and Vinesh Phogat for wrestlers, PV Sindhu for badminton and Nikhat Zareen for boxing in the nominations.

According to the India Head of the organisation, Rupa Jha, the winner of this award will be announced on March 5. She also announced that along with the Indian Sports Woman of the Year, an iconic sportswoman will also receive the Lifetime achievement award. Also, awards will be presented for the Indian Para Sportswoman of the Year and the Indian Emerging Player of the Year.

An expert panel selected by the organisation has shortlisted these five sportswomen among all the female players in the country. An expert panel comprising top sports journalists and other experts in the field will decide on the final winners of the awards. With so many experts from different sports, in the nominations, the expert panel has a very difficult job on their hands.

Mirabai Chanu from Manipur has won multiple medals in the Commonwealth Games and World Championships. She also has an Olympic Silver to her name in the field of weightlifting.

Sakshee Malik won the gold in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after a silver and a bronze in the previous editions. She too has an Olympic Bronze to her name.

Vinesh Phogat has a hat trick of Gold Medals to her name in the Commonwealth Games. She won the medals in 2014, 2018 and 2022 versions in the 48kg, 50kg and 53kg categories of the game. She also scored medals in the World Championships in Belgrade.

PV Sindhu bagged gold and silver in the Commonwealth Games. She also had multiple Olympic Medals and multiple titles in the BWF World Tour.

Nikhat Zareen won gold in the World Boxing Championships as well as Commonwealth Games.
