With his 28th victory of the year, Tsitsipas pulled level with 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz atop the season's match-wins leaderboard.

Tsitsipas next faces Karen Khachanov, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 winner over 15th seed Pablo Carreno Busta earlier on Wednesday.

In other Round 16 matches of the day, Marcos Giron beat 12th seed Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 7-6 (4), Jenson Brooksby beat David Goffin 6-0, 7-6 (1), A. de Minaur beat Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-4.

Returning to action for the first time in two-and-a-half weeks, Swiatek dropped serve twice in the opening set of her match against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, but it didn't matter much in the end, breaking Ruse seven times in 12 opportunities, the top seed cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win in just 68 minutes. She also hit 15 winners, five times the Romanian's total. Azarenka, the No.16 seed, eased to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Colombia's Camila Osorio. Agencies
