GUWAHATI: The competition was almost over for Gongutri Bordoloi when she was nearly half way mark. But the cyclist defied all odds to give Assam second gold in the third Khelo India Games here today.
Gongutri, participated in the 60kms Individual Road Race (girls U-21) today, won gold with 2:11:52.16 timing. Her teammate Chayanika Gogoi (2:11:52.31) won bronze in the same event. On the other hand Swasti Singh from Odisha (2:11:52.21) bagged silver.
Gongutri started the race as per expectation and first 20 kms was trouble free. But thereafter the handle of her cycle started to create a lot of problem and once the cyclist felt that the competition was over for her.
Talking to the media persons after the race at LNIPE complex, Sonapur Gongutri said: “At the middle of the competition I was in deep trouble as my cycle, particularly handle, was giving me huge problem. One time I thought I couldn’t finish the race. But I didn’t stop and tried my best to cross the distance as early as possible. Thanks God and the people of Assam because it was their blessing that helped me to collect gold medal in the championship.”
