GUWAHATI: Keeping in mind the COVID-19 pandemic the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) has decided to keep boxer Lovlina Borgohain's maiden visit to Guwahati, after Tokyo Olympics, a very simple affair. Lovlina will visit the city on August 12 and she would be felicitated by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department on the same day.
Talking to The Sentinel the secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association's Secretary Hemanta Kalita said, "Lovlina's bronze medal is a big moment for us and perhaps we would arrange huge function to celebrate her success. But due to COVID-19 pandemic we have decided to keep her visit a simple affair."
He further added: "A small group of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association would present at the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to receive Lovlina on August 12. Later, the association would felicitate the medal winning boxer at the same function which would be organized by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra."
It was the first occasion when an athlete from Assam brought a medal from Olympics. Lovlina, participated in women welterweight category, collected bronze in Tokyo Games. The boxer is already set her new target and it is to change the colour of her medal in Paris Olympics. Kalita is confident that Lovlina would be able to fulfill her dream.
"I met Lovlina in Delhi yesterday and she looked very determined to better her performance in Paris Olympics which will be held three years later. Before Olympics, Lovlina would participate in two major events-Commonwealth Games and Asian games. I feel these two events would give her good opportunities to prepare herself for next Olympics," said the secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association.
