Assam collect five more medals in National Games

GUWAHATI: Maintaing good show Assam grabbed five bronze medals in the 37th National Games in Goa on Thursday. The medals came in table tennis, taekwondo, diving and sepak takraw events.

Promising paddler Priyanuj Bhattacharyya lost his singles semifinal to Y Malik (Delhi) 1-4 and ended the campaign with a bronze medal. It was the second medal for the paddler in this edition of the Games.

Men’s taekwondo team, represented by Kishore Bora, Debdas Roy and Rishav Choudhury, won a bronze medal in poomsae.

Meanwhile Joydeep Nayak, surprising all, picked up a bronze medal from the diving event. He took part in the one meter springboard. It was the first medal for Assam in diving in the National Games history.

The other two medals came in sepak takraw (regu). The Assam men and women team finished their campaign in the semi final losing to Manipur in both the categories.

Moreover Arjuna Awardee archer Jayanta Talukdar, who represented Assam for the first time in the National Games, ensured medals for the State in the mixed recurve event with Himani Boro. The duo in the semi final defeated Gujarat 6-2 and entered into the gold medal match. In the final they will now face Dipika Kumari and Munal of Jharkhand.

Assam also ensured two more medals in the Wushu today. Sunil Chinte stormed into the semi final defeating a local opponent within five seconds of his bout. In the women’s event Sunita Limbu confirmed her medal by entering into the last-four stage in 65kg.
