Assam cross 100 medals in North East Olympic Games in Shillong

GUWAHATI: Maintaining their supremacy Assam crossed the 100 mark in the medals tally in the 2nd North East Olympic Games in Shillong today. After the end of the fifth day Assam were placed at the top of the tally with 108 medals which included 44 gold, 38 silver and 26 bronze. Manipur were at second place with 40 gold, 35 silver and 39 bronze. Assam won several medals today in various events that included swimming, badminton shooting, karate and others.

Swimming: Assam dominated the events and collected seven more medals on the concluding day of this event. Altogether 66 medals were decided in the pool and Assam bagged 36 of them which included 20 gold, 12 silver and 4 bronze. State swimmers Jananjoy Jyoti Hazarika and Jhanabi Kashyap also bagged best men and women swimmer titles in the meet. While Jananjoy won 3 gold and one silver, Jahnabi picked up four gold medals from the pool.

Weightlifting: Assam bagged five medals in this event today. Among the five medals one was gold and it was collected by Bornali Bora in the 49 kg weight category.

Karate: Assam won six medals, including one gold, in Karate on Monday. The lone gold medal was won by Abinash Das in the 45 kg category.

Shooting: Assam collected 8 medals in this category on Monday. Men's team won the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol and Y Gautam also collected a gold in this event in the individual category.

Badminton: Assam made a good show in badminton today and won multiple medals which included 3 gold also. Isharani won gold in women's singles while Joyraj Pegu and Tanmoy Bikash collected gold in men's doubles. In the mixed doubles Assam bagged gold through Isharani and Joyraj.

Among other medal winning events for Assam on Monday were wrestling, judo, tennis and boxing. In the basketball Assam men's team entered into the final beating Nagaland 73-71.
