GUWAHATI: Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) today accorded warm felicitation to Devajit Saikia, the newly elected joint secretary of the BCCI, in a function held at the RG Baruah Sports complex here on Wednesday. Several veteran sports organizers and former sports persons attended the function.
Saikia was elected the joint secretary of BCCI in its 91st Annual General Meeting which was held in Mumbai on Tuesday. It was the first occasion that a sports organizer from the State was elected for the coveted post.
Addressing the gathering Saikia looked a bit emotional. "It is the same place from where I started my journey as a cricket administrator. So when Pulakda (The president of the Guwahati Sports Association) gave me a call yesterday and told me about the event I told him that after returning to Guwahati I will first visit the Guwahati Sports Association office and will share my success with all the members. I feel it is not my personal achievement. It's your blessings and wishes that helped me to get this coveted post."
In his speech Saikia also gave an idea about his future plans where he mentioned that development of cricket would definitely get priority and at the same time he would work to promote other sports also.
Recently the Assam Cricket Association inaugurated its new Club House-91 Yards Club. The cricket administrator said, "We have planned to adopt a few games, may be its football, squash…, in our club and I promise you that it will be done in a very planned way."
Saikia also brought some good news for the cricket fans. He announced that the city is expected to host 3-4 games of IPL in the coming season. Rajasthan Royals and KKR are interested in bringing a couple of their matches in Guwahati."
At the same time he added: "BCCI will introduce women's IPL from the next year and it is almost sure that there will be one team from the North East whose base will be in Guwahati."
Highlighting BCCI's plan to promote cricket in the North East, the former first class cricketer said, "Already it is decided to construct indoor stadiums in all the North East states except Assam and Tripura. We also planned to construct another cricket Stadium with a crowd capacity of nearly 60-65 thousand at the outskirt of the city."
The president of the Guwahati Sports Association Pulak Goswami and the president of the Assam Cricket Association Romen Dutta also spoke a few words in the programme.
