GUWAHATI: Assam suffered 21 runs defeat against Chandigarh in the rain-affected Vijay Hazare Cricket tournament tie held at Dehradun today. Chasing 167 runs to win in 20 overs Assam were bowled out 145.
It’s the middle order which was responsible for this defeat as it once again failed to come out as per expectation. Opener Sarupam and Rahul Hazarika gave flying start adding 50 in just 44 balls but once the partnership was broken on the depart of Sarupam, Assam lost wickets on a regular interval and was bowled out 145 in 19.5 overs.
Only Abu Nechim Ahmed was the other member of the team who tried to give little resistance to the opponent bowlers.
Sarupam, the highest scorer in the innings, departed on his individual score 32 (27 balls, 4X4). Another opener Rahul (10) followed him immediately. Sibsankar Roy (13), Riyan Parag (0), Amit Sinha (2), Pallab Kumar Das (15) and Wasiqur Rahman (13) too failed to stay on the wicket too long. It was Abu Nechim Ahmed’s 15 balls 31 (4x2, 6x3) that made the game a little interesting at the fag end.
Earlier elected to bat, Chandigarh scored 166-7 in their 20 overs. Pritam Das, who bagged five wickets in the earlier games, once again bowled well and picked up 3-26 in his four overs. Arup Das bagged two wickets. Preet Kamal (34) was the top scorer for Chandigarh in the match.
