Chirang organizes semi-marathon race on Sports Pension Day

On the occasion of birth anniversary of Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Baruah, Sports Pension Day was observed in Chirang district on Friday.

KOKRAJHAR: On the occasion of birth anniversary of Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Baruah, Sports Pension Day was observed in Chirang district on Friday.

To mark the occasion, a semi-marathon race was organized with the participation of over 100 emerging athletes from different parts of the district from Kajalgaon Yoga Centre to Kajalgaon community hall via No.1 Silpota and District Transport Office. The event was organized by Chirang District Sports department and was flagged off by Ranjit Basumatary, Executive Member (EM) for Forest, etc, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

Addressing the event, Council Head of Department (CHD) of Sports and District Sports Officer (DSO), Chirang, Jajnabati Mahilary said that this was a very important day for all the sports loving people as we could back again in our sporting activities after a long gap due to COVID-19 pandemic. She also said adding that the pension policy announced by the government was really good news considering the future lives of all the players involved in the sports world.

In his speech as the Chief Guest of the programme, EM Ranjit Basumatary said that today was the beginning of a new day for the development of the sports activities in the state as there were so many players who spent their precious life only playing for the country without having any benefit from the government. "The decision taken by the sports department of the Government of Assam will benefit all the players who are playing for our country. If our rising generation is engaged in sports activities along with education and seeks to establish themselves as professional sports persons, then it will be possible for them what Lavlina Bargohain could achieve in her life", EM Ranjit Basumatary added.

In today's mini marathon race, the first, second and third prizes in the men's category were won by Bijay Basumatary, Sadin Basumatary and Ajay Chandra Ray respectively. In the women's category, the first, second and third place went to Udangshri Mushahary, Dalimi Narjary and Udangshri Basumatary respectively.

The prizes for the winners of the event were distributed by EM Ranjit Basumatary as chief guest, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Brahmananda Patiri and Jajnabati Mahilary, CHD and District Sports Officer, Chirang, as distinguished guests.
