GUWAHATI: International fencer from Assam Th Kabita Devi is now busy to take part in the Senior National Fencing championship which got underway at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today. Talking to The Sentinel prior to the inaugural function the fencer shares her early life in the game and the future plan. Here is the excerpt.
How did you come to fencing?
Actually, first I watched the game on television and from the very first day my attraction had started to grow up towards this game. Initially, there was a little bit problem to get equipment and proper training facilities. But I overcame all odds with the support from my well-wishers.
Tell us about your early days...
I am from Lakhipur region in Cachar District. I started my fencing career in Guwahati as facilities for this game are available here. I represented Assam in National Level Championship in all age categories and also bagged several medals. My best achievement was to represent India in the last Asian Games although missed a medal narrowly.
What is your next target?
I want to represent India in the Olympic and win a medal for the country.
What kind of facilities you require right now to reach your goal?
I need two things-very modern training facilities and strong opponent in the practice particularly when I stay in Guwahati. Our Federation is trying to arrange training for the senior fencers in abroad and if it is happened it will be excellent news for us. I can assure that we have very good prospect in this game.
What role federation is playing to promote the game in the country?
We have already seen a lot of positive changes in the activities of Federation. They are trying their best to provide more facilities to the fencers of the country and I am optimistic that India will be able to produce more and more quality fencers in the coming days.
