Angelina, Dibakar adjudged top athletes

GUWAHATI: Guwahati bagged best team award in the Invitational Prize Money Athletics Competition held at the Judges' Field here today. Tezpur and Tinsukia finished second and third respectively.
In the individual category Angelina Jackson (Tinsukia, gold in 100mts girls) and Dibakar Choubuy (Guwahati, gold in boys long jump) collected best athletes award of the meet.
It was the first occasion when a competition was held after COVID-19 break in the state. Around 132 athletes from 31 districts participated in five events which were jointly organized by Assam Athletics Association, Assam Olympic Association, Directorate of Sports and Sports Authority of Assam.
Guwahati, on way to bag top position, collected 9 medals which included five gold, two silver and same number of bronze. Tezpur and Tinsukia won three medals (2 gold) and 4 medals (2 gold) respectively.
Earlier, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the meet. Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said that amid COVID 19 pandemic, the participation of the athletes from across the state is a testimony of their drive and zeal which would provide motivation to other players across the nation. He also hoped that the gloomy atmosphere purportedly created by the COVID 19 pandemic will be dispelled by the spontaneous participation of the players. Organising the competition and participating in it following all safety protocols will definitely be an example for other organizers and players alike.
While Commissioner and Secretary (Sports) Dr. Angamuthu gave the welcome address, Guwahati Development Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, Member Secretary State Level Advisory Committee for Youth and Student welfare Lakhya Konwar also spoke on the occasion. MP Queen Oja, Bhubaneswar Kalita, MLA Rituparna Baruah former players Gilbertson Sangma, Tayabun Nesa and a host of other dignitaries were present in the inaugural function.
