Guwahati Sports Association to put huge 622-member contingent in Assam Youth Olympics

It will be the first occasion when the Assam Olympic Association is going to host the Youth Olympics

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) will put a huge contingent, with 622 players and officials, in the 1st Assam Youth Olympics which will begin on Friday. Raghabendra Majumder, the secretary of the athletic section of the association, will be the Chef de Mission of the team.

Talking to The Sentinel the secretary of the GSA Dhrubajyoti Kalita said, "We will participate in 28 events and the number of participants will be 622 which includes 551 players, 37 coaches and 34 officials. We will also depute 7 deputy Chef de Mission with the team."

It will be the first occasion when the Assam Olympic Association is going to host the Youth Olympics with an aim to provide a good platform to the budding athletes of the State. 35 districts will participate in the 6-day meet and around 4500 players will compete in 32 events in eight different venues. The participating teams are expected to arrive in the city from tomorrow and the competition will kick off with Hockey and Football from Friday.

Commenting on the possible performance of the GSA team Kalita said, "We are putting strong teams in various events and are very much optimistic that our team will be able to display a splendid show and make the podium finish."
