GUWAHATI: The 71st Senior National Men and Women Volleyball Championship will be held in Guwahati from February 2. Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium at the Sarusajai Sports complex will be the venue of the competition.
It will be the third occasion when Guwahati will host the Senior National Volleyball Championship. Earlier the event was held in the city in 1971 and 1989 respectively.
Addressing a media gathering the working president of the Assam Volleyball Association Pradip Hazarika said that around 1000 players and officials from different parts of the country will participate in the tournament and the number of teams will be around 60 (including both men and women).
Hazarika also added that last year only three teams from the North East took part in the Senior National Volleyball Championship and this time they are expecting all the teams from the region in the forthcoming meet.
The media briefing was also attended by the secretary of the Assam Volleyball Association Prakash Bora. Highlighting the preparation of the Assam team Bora said, "We have already selected the probables for the State team from the recently concluded Inter District Volleyball championship held in Boko. Now the players will attend the training camp."
He also added that there will be cash awards for the champion and runners up team. Champion team will earn Rs 50,000 and the runners up team will collect a purse of Rs 30,000.
