GUWAHATI: Kerala defeated Assam by 8 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Cricket tournament in Delhi today. It was the third defeat for Assam in the competition and they are now in fourth place in the points table of Group 'D' with 8 points from four outings.
Invited to bat, Assam scored 121-8 in their 20 overs. Riyan Parag was the top score with 24. Saahil Jain, the second highest scorer in the team, contributed 21.
The start was not good today. After losing three wickets-Pallav Kumar Das (16), Denish Das (4) and Abhisekh Thakuri (9)- for 32 in 6.2 overs captain Riyan and Rishav Das (15) tried to repair the damage and the fourth wicket partnership between them produced 32 runs. However once the partnership was broken Kerala came back into the game and put huge pressure on Assam's innings by taking wickets on regular intervals.
Assam still managed to put the fighting total on the board due to 9th wicket partnership between Mukhtar Hussain and Roshan Alam. The duo, in unbeaten partnership, added 23 runs in just 14 balls.
Chasing 122 runs to win was not a difficult task for Kerala and they reached the target in 18 overs losing 2 wickets. Opener Rohan S Kunnummal remained not out on 56. Sachin Baby (26) was accompanying him when the match came to an end. Azharuddin (24) and Sanju Samson(14) were the two batsmen which Kerala lost today and the wickets were picked up by Rajjakuddin and Riyan Parag respectively.
Assam will face Railways tomorrow.
