Mirabai Chanu creates new World Record

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu set a new world record in Clean and Jerk as she lifted 119 kg at Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent on Saturday.

GUWAHATI: Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu set a new world record in Clean and Jerk as she lifted 119 kg at Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent on Saturday.

Mirabai also created a new national record as she lifted a total of 205 kg (86 kg snatch + 119 kg Clean and Jerk) which also won her the bronze medal at the showpiece event.

The 26-year-old Chanu, an employee of NF Railway, achieved the feat in the final attempt by lifting 119kg to storm to the bronze. Her final lift of 119 kg set a new world record, going past Chinese lifter Jiang Huihua's previous record of 118kg.

Reacting in a tweet on her record breaking performance the weightlifter said, "I am happy with my performance at the Asian Championship 2021. Thank you everyone for your love and support. I will continue to work hard and improve myself."
