KOHIMA: Tenloi Phom, a 16-year-old athlete from Nagaland, recently secured a silver medal in the 48kg category of Taekwondo at the 66th National School Games held in Delhi. Representing the state team, Tenloi demonstrated his skills and determination throughout the tournament.
In his first match, he faced a competitor from Karnataka and emerged victorious. He continued his winning streak in the second match against Chhattisgarh. The semifinals proved to be another triumph for Tenloi as he defeated his opponent from Assam, showcasing his prowess in the sport. However, in the final match, he faced a tough challenge from Haryana and had to settle for the silver medal.
Tenloi's achievement is commendable, and he has brought pride to his state and school. He is a student at TM Government Higher Secondary School in Kohima, Nagaland, and is currently undergoing training at the Sports Academy located in the IG Stadium in Kohima. This accomplishment reflects his dedication and hard work in pursuing his passion for Taekwondo.
Led by coach Visabiu Peseyie and team manager Deepak Prasad, a total of eight players are representing Nagaland in the championship. The Nagaland Taekwondo team is proudly competing under the Department of Youth Resources and Sports.
Among the other participants from Nagaland, Thongti, competing in the under 45 kg category, won the first match against Jharkhand but unfortunately lost to Gujarat in the following match. Similarly, Nnumhei, participating in the under 63 kg category, secured victory in the first match against Andhra Pradesh but faced defeat against Gujarat in the subsequent round.
Despite the mixed results, the Nagaland Taekwondo team is determined to continue their efforts and strive for success. They have four more matches remaining in the championship, and they are eager to give their best performances.
It is worth noting that the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) has organized the 66th National School Games after a three-year hiatus. The tournament is taking place in two different states, Bhopal and Delhi, from June 6 to June 12. This event provides young athletes from various regions an opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at a national level.
