GUWAHATI: Assam were struggling to chase a huge first innings total of Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy match in Chennai on 18th Jan. In reply to Tamil Nadu's first innings total 540 Assam were 120-4 at stumps on day II. Captain Gokul Sharma was playing at 18 and Abhishek Thakuri (17) giving him the accompany.

The start of the innings was not good for Assam as they lost opener Rahul Hazarika (4) on team's total 5. Rishav Das (13) followed him quickly. Riyan Parag and opener Subham Mandal tried to repair the damage but the 3rd wicket partnership didn't last long as Subham returned into the pavilion contributing 13 runs on the board. Assam lost the other wicket in the form of Riyan Parag who made a good start and scored 48 from 78 balls with the help of 9 boundaries before ran out.

Gokul and Abhishek faced 72 balls together in the remaining part of the day's play and added 33 runs on the unbroken fifth-wicket partnership.

Earlier Tamil Nadu, starting from their overnight score 386-4, took their score to 540 before got out. Home team batted 42.3 overs in the morning and added another 154 runs. Pradosh Ranjan Paul, remained not out on 99 yesterday, completed his century and took his score to 153 (4X16) before losing the wicket on the bowling of Riyan Parag. His overnight not out partner Vijay Shankar (112, 4X7, 6X1) also scored century today. The fifth-wicket partnership between them produced 263 runs.

Riyan Parag once again came out with a nice bowling spell and the spinner finished 4-101. Siddharth Sarmah (3-107) was the other major contributor with the ball for Assam in the first innings.
