UAGA Caddie tournament held on Independence day

DIBRUGARH: On the occasion of Independence Day, a Caddie tournament was held under the aegis of the Upper Assam Golf Association at Dibrugarh & District Planters’ Club, Chawlkhowa.

The tournament saw an overwhelming response with a total of 65 caddies taking part and coming from Digboi, Duliajan, Tingri, Dinjan among others. Caddies play a vital role in the game of golf and its promotion, and this was their chance to showcase their talents. Living in and around the golf courses, the caddies have a natural flair for the game, some playing with home-made wooden sticks.

After the flag hoisting, the tournament went underway with finally Biren Karmakar of Digboi emerging trium-phant with a score of 71 among the pro category, and Ashraf Ali of Duliajan from the amateur category, winning hands down with a score of 68 being 3 under the course par, knocking on the doors of the professional circuit. Other winners of the Tournament were Asit Orang, BhaitiNaik, SamaruMurah, MintuMurah and John Orang.

The District Commissioner, Bikram Kairi, IAS and the Superintendent of Police, Shwetank Mishra, IPS gave away the prizes to the proud winners.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC and SP commended the UAGA for organizing such a tournament amongst the under privileged members of the society in such an auspicious day, congratulated the winners, and wished more such tournaments be held in future. The organizers Samar Jyoti Chaliha, President, Sid Chaliha, Secretary, Dr. Mrinal K Baruah, Advisor, and members Pankaj Barooah, Ambarish Borthakur, Dr. Dipak Verma, Dr. Probin Thakur and Col. Alok Tripathy also distributed prize money, iron sticks and golf balls amongst the winners to en-courage the sport amongst the younger caddies. This is stated in a release.
