GUWAHATI: Four volleyball legends across the globe today shared their experience with the local players and coaches in a specially designed workshop organized by the Brahmaputra Volleyball League. The event-named Knowledge Transfer Programme-was held at the Guwahati Volleyball Coaching Centre in the city.

The legends who were present today in the event were Mireya Luis from Cuba, Vladimir Grbic (Serbia) and Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho (Giba) from Brazil. The trio were part of their respective national team which won gold in the Olympics. They were joined by Volleyball expert Peter Van Tarel from the Netherlands.

The man behind the Brahmaputra Volleyball League Abhijit Bhattacharyya, a former captain of the Indian volleyball team, told the local media, “BVL is working to promote volleyball at the grass-root level by organizing competitions across the State. We feel the arrangement of proper training for the young players and local coaches are also essential. FIVB has a special pilot project to promote the game at the grassroot level and we approached them and they responded positively”

He also added that a few similar workshops will also be held in rural areas in the next two-day and all four experts will present there.

During the workshop the three Olympic medallists today shared their views on BVL and various other issues. Reacting on BVL’s role to promote the game in the State, Olympic gold winner Vladimir said, “The concept is very good. Young players will be highly benefited and the programme will also help to develop the game in your locality.” He also felt that at the graassroot level modern infrastructure is not essential. The organizers should work only to provide quality training and sufficient number of competitions to the players.

On the right age to enter into the game Olympic gold medallist Giba said, “10-12 years is the right age to start the game. However, a little late entry is not a problem as now the training programme and training facilities are very good across the globe.”

Commenting on the daily routine of young players, the three times Olympic gold medal winner Mireya Luis said, “The players should follow a disciplined life and at the same time they must work hard in the court setting small targets.”
