Women's National Football Championship: Assam begin campaign in style

Assam made a solid start in the Junior Women’s National Football Championship by thrashing Poducherry 6-1 in their opening game at Dimakuchi today.

GUWAHATI: Assam made a solid start in the Junior Women's National Football Championship by thrashing Poducherry 6-1 in their opening game at Dimakuchi today. Anjuli Brahma, who alone scored four goals, adjudged the player of the match.

Assam took 33 minutes to open the account in Group G match when Sonal Dutta netted the opener. She also scored another goal in 57th minute. Anjuli came into the scene in the 34th minute when she scored her first goal to put Assam two up. The footballer added another three goals in her name in the injury time of first half, 68th and 83rd minutes. Poducherry reduced the margin through Sivaranjani in the 48th minute.

With this win Assam collected three points and they will face Gujarat on Thursday at the same venue.

Meanwhile, in the other Group G match held at Dimakuchi, Haryana beat Gujarat by 5-1. Kalpna (3), Preety and Saniya scored for the winner. Muskan Dubey netted the lone goal for Gujarat.

Four matches were held at the Sarusajai Sports Complex here today. Although earlier there was uncertainty over the participation of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in the competition due to bad weather conditions in the region, both the teams finally turned up and played their first game today.

In Group B, Mizoram shared points with Chhattisgarh after the match ended 1-1 draw. Zonuntluangi put Mizoram ahead in the 23rd minute, but Payal Kawasi scored the equalizer 7 minutes before the final whistle. Arunachal Pradesh, in a Group D match, registered 2-0 victory over Sikkim. Yumlal Lali and Angel Tayang netted for the winner. In the other match of the same group Goa and Himachal Pradesh played a goalless draw.

In a Group B tie, Karnataka defeated Uttar Pradesh by a solitary goal. Treia Menon scored the lone goal for her team in the 56 minute.
