NEW DELHI: India's Olympic Games silver winner Mirabai Chanu has booked a berth for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the 55kg weight category on Friday as she earned the gold in the Singapore Weightlifting International in Singapore.

Chanu, who was competing for the first time in the 55kg weight class, lifted 191 kg. "Six months of intense training and my never-ending love for the sport continues to pay off as I qualify for the CWG2022," she said.

Jessica Sewastenko of Australia came in second. Elly Cassandra Englebert of Malaysia took the third spot.

Mirabai became eligible to compete in the 55kg weight category at the Birmingham Games later this year after winning 86kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk in her first competition after the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Sanket Sargar won the men's 55kg event, setting two Commonwealth records in the clean and jerk (143kg) and total (256kg). He did 113kg in snatch.

C. Rishikanta Singh won silver in the 55kg category. He was able to lift a total of 246 kilogrammes (including 110kg in snatch and 136kg in clean and jerk).

CWG 2022 will be held in Birmingham from July 20 to August 8. The Singapore Weightlifting International served as a qualifier for the Birmingham CWG 2022. Top eight lifters in each weight division will automatically qualify for the CWG in 2022.

Coach Vijay Sharma is optimistic about Indian weightlifters achieving a qualification in all 16 weight categories.
