STAVANGER: Having spent more than a quarter of a century in the world's top-10 rankings since 1991, Viswanathan Anand regained his place in the elite bracket with a second-round victory over former World champion Veselin Topalov in the Norway chess tournament at Stavanger on Thursday.

Viswanathan Anand's triumph came in an equal position after Topalov was declared "lost on time" following his 37th move. The time-control in this event is two hours per player for all the moves with a 10-second increment per move after the 40th move.

The second straight victory, worth three points, raised Anand's tally to six and saw him lead the 10-player field. This result also stretched Anand's unbeaten run against the Bulgarian since their 2010 World championship clash.

Significantly, the gain of 9.70 rating points from two victories in as many days lifted Anand six places to be ninth in live ratings, at 2760.70. Next, Anand plays sixth-placed Wang Hao. Agencies
