GUWAHATI: The death anniversary of the legendary sports organizer of the State RG Baruah was observed in the city on Thursday. Various functions were organized at the RG Baruah Sports complex to mark the occasion.
Assam Olympic Association today paid floral tribute to the pioneer sports organizer, the architect of the Nehru Stadium, in a brief function held in front of RG Baruah's bust. Vice President of the Indian Olympic Association Bhubaneswar Kalita, Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar, veteran Sports organizer Premadhar Sarma and others attended the programme.
Later Radha Govinda Baruah Smriti Sangha (RGBSS) organized a memorial function at the Conference Hall of the Assam Olympic Association where several sportspersons and sports organizers were felicitated. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Borah attended the function as the Chief guest. Other present on this occasion were Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly Numal Momin, MLA Prithiraj Rava (Tezpur), MLA Dharmeswar Konwar (Sonari), veteran sports journalist Premadhar Sarma, secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar, president and secretary of the Radha Govinda Baruah Smriti Sangha Jahirul Haq and Amal Narayan Patowary respectively.
In a brief speech Sports Minister Borah today said, "RG Baruah converted a dumping ground into a stadium and that too at a time when the economic and social condition of the State was not well off. He should be an inspiration to the young generation of the State."
Numal Momin in his speech termed Baruah as the architect of Modern Assam.
The Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Devajit Saikia also addressed the gathering. He appealed to the concerned authority to take steps so that RG Baruah Guest House, which was leased to a private party, returns to its previous state.
The sportspersons and organizers felicitated in the function were: Abdul Matin, Devajit Saikia, Romen Das, Muruli Dhar Choudhury, Prafulla Talukdar, Ganesh Tamuli, Motilal Nunisa, Dharmeswar Konwar, Jain Sarma, Manoj Choudhury, Dipak Handiq, Lovlina Borgohan, Shiva Thapa, Ashmita Chaliha, Arunjyoti Moran, Dilip Kumar Das, Karuna Saikia and sports organizer cum social worker Kavita Mazumdar.
The Radha Govinda Baruah Smriti Sangha also started a signature campaign from today to support boxer Lovlina Borgohain who will participate in the forthcoming Olympic scheduled to be held in Tokyo from July 23.
