MADRID: World No.1 Iga Swiatek extended her clay-court winning streak this spring to six with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No.29 seed Bernarda Pera on Sunday in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
Thought she was a break down early in the first set, Swiatek needed just 75 minutes to dispatch Pera and move through to a fourth-round meeting with either No.22 seed Zheng Qinwen or No.16 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Third seed Jessica Pegula beat Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 7-6 to reach the fourth round.
In other third round matches of the day, Petra Martic beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 8th seed Daria Kasatkina beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-2, 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova beat Anastasia Potapova 7-6, 5-7, 6-3, 9th seed Maria Sakkari beat Rebeka Masarova 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, Martina Trevisan beat Alycia Parks 7-6, 6-1, Mayar Sherif shocked 5th seed Caroline Garcia 7-6, 6-3.
Zverev Cruises Through In Madrid 2023
Alexander Zverev continued his love affair with the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday when he wasted little time in reaching the fourth round. The German overpowered French qualifier Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 in 55 minutes.
Zverev survived an opening-round scare against Roberto Carballes Baena but faced no such problems against Grenier. He struck 26 winners, won 86 per cent (17/20) of net points and broke Grenier’s serve six times to earn his 12th win of the season.
5th seed Andrey Rublev thrashed Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 7-5 to reach the last 16 stage.
In other third round matches, 10th Karen Khachanov beat Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, Jaume Munar beat Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Agencies
