NAGAON: Star Sporting Club beat Lane Roll Club, Cachar by 3-1 in the opening league match of the 75th Independence Day Cup Football Tournament at Nagaon Nurul Amin Stadium last evening here. The tournament is being organized for long by Nagaon Sports Association here and it was organized this time as its platinum jubilee.
The first half of the match was concluded with a margin of 2-1 and the third goal for Star Sporting Club was netted in the 2nd half by Lakshyajyoti Das.
Earlier, Briyan Doski and Arun Tanti netted the other two goals in the first half of the match. Hamba Thaunjam scored the only goal for Lane Roll, Cachar.
The platinum jubilee of Independence Day Cup Football Tournament was ceremonially inaugurated by noted singer Zubin Garg while local MLA and the president of Nagaon Sports Association Rupak Sarma presented a brief note on the history of the tournament being organized for over decades by Nagaon Sports Association. Noted athelete of the district Hima Das was also present in the opening session as a special invitee.
Raha MLA Sashi Kanta Das, Dr Changran Brahma, president of Assam Football Association, DC Narendra Kumar Shah participated in the opening session of the platinum jubilee of ID Cup Football Tournament. During the programme, Nagaon Sports Association also felicitated over hundred of former footballers of the district too.
