18 districts reeling under floods in Assam

GUWAHATI: Despite a slight improvement in the flood situation, the Brahmaputra is still flowing above danger levels at many stretches in the state, where areas of 18 districts are reeling under flood waters.

According to the bulletin of the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above danger levels at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district, Tezpur in the Sonitpur district, Guwahati in the Kamrup (M) district, Goalpara in the Goalpara district, and Dhubri in the Dhubri district. The water level of the Brahmaputra is steady in Dibrugarh, Goalpara, and Dhubri but is maintaining a falling trend at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Guwahati. The other rivers in the state are either steady or maintaining a falling trend.

According to an ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) report, 45 revenue circles in 18 districts in the state are reeling under flood waters. The districts are Barpeta, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, and Sonitpur. The floods have affected as many as 3,24,938 people—1,36,780 males, 1,11,993 females, and 76,165 children—in 898 villages in the state. Nalbari is the worst-affected district in terms of the affected population, with 72,427. Following it are Darrang with 72,133, Golaghat with 56,772, Morigaon with 44,181, and Sivasagar with 29,893. The deluge has also affected over 23,000 hectares of cropland. Seven relief camps are still operational in the state, giving shelter to 2,197 affected people. Golaghat has 1,980 affected people taking shelter in relief camps.

Landslides damaged a house at Halflong in the Dima Hasao district. Reports of erosion came from Biswanath, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia. The flood toll in the state so far this year is 16.

Meanwhile, the RMC (Regional Meteorological Centre) in Guwahati predicted light to moderate rainfall at some places and heavy rainfall with lighting at some other places in the state in the next 24 hours.
