GUWAHATI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it mandatory for colleges and universities to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to be eligible for central assistance under Section 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. There are several colleges and universities in the north-eastern states which are yet to get accreditation from NAAC.
Among the north-eastern states, Assam has the highest number of colleges and universities which are yet to be accredited by NAAC. This has been revealed in the UGC’s recent status report on NAAC data for the accreditation of universities and colleges as on July 2023. According to the status report, 59 universities in the Northeast have not been accredited by NAAC. Among the 59 universities, Assam has the highest number – 20. Among the other north-eastern states, Arunachal Pradesh has 7 universities without NAAC accreditation, Manipur has 8, Meghalaya 9, Mizoram 2, Nagaland 4, Sikkim 6 and Tripura 3. In Assam, there are a total of 28 universities. Among them, 8 have been accredited by NAAC.
On the other hand, there are 574 colleges in the north-eastern states without NAAC accreditation. Assam again tops the list with 338 colleges. Arunachal Pradesh has 33 colleges without NAAC accreditation, Manipur 63, Meghalaya 51, Mizoram 13, Nagaland 32, Sikkim 14 and Tripura 30. There are a total of 595 colleges in Assam, out of which 257 have been accredited by NAAC.
The UGC status report, however, does not mention the names of the colleges and universities without NAAC accreditation. NAAC was established by the UGC in September 1994 to evaluate the performance of universities and colleges in the country. NAAC accreditation helps to understand the quality of the colleges and universities in terms of education, research, faculty, infrastructure etc.
