2.27 lakh teachers underutilized in Assam

GUWAHATI: If the data from the Shiksha Setu Axom of the Department of Education has anything to go by, Assam has as many as 2,27,345 underutilized teachers. Such teachers attend less than five sections. According to October 27 data from Shiksha Setu Axom, the department considers a teacher adequately utilized when he or she attends five sections. However, the state has only 3,707 teachers who attend five sections.

The data also shows that the state has 3,902 overutilized teachers who attend more than five sections.

The data also shows a grim picture of the Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) in the state. Assam has 7,576 primary schools with high PTR, 24,071 primary schools with low PTR, 1,263 other than primary schools with high PTR, and 8,403 other than primary schools with low PTR.

The data further says that the department has listed 8,053 primary schools with less than 30 students each for possible amalgamation. In the other-than-primary category, the department has listed 988 schools with less than 35 students each for possible amalgamation.

The state has as many as 43,926 schools with 47,77,798 students from primary to higher secondary.
