GUWAHATI: Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has 42 pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) ready. The newly installed general ICUs in the medical college are dual-mode that can serve as PICUs after instaling software.
Experts apprehend the occurrence of a third of the Covid-19 in the country. They say that the third wave may affect children badly. The installation of PICUs in the state is to save children from the third wave if any.
Talking to the media here today, GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma said, "The GMCH has treated 305 children during the pandemic, and 12 of them are still under treatment. Some experts say that the third wave of the Covid-19 may affect children. It is well and good if the third wave does not occur. We have 42 PICUs ready in the GMCH.
"The GMCH has 200 newly installed general ICUs of dual-mode in its parking areas. Installing software, we can use them for children as well. We are well-equipped. We have 300 ICUs and oxygen beds at Sarusajai. The Covid hospital at Kalapahar also has ICUs and oxygen beds."
Talking to The Sentinel, GMCH Principal Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya said, "The recovery rate of children is encouraging. We admitted very few children to ICUs. They are Covid patients with comorbidities.
