GUWAHATI: Many ineligible families availed the benefit of ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) since 2013, but as a result of strict review and appeals made by the state government, many ineligible beneficiaries have come forward and voluntarily surrendered their ration cards.

According to sources in the Directorate of Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, as many as 42,329 families have surrendered their ration cards till the second week of September last.

It is pertinent to mention that under the NFSA, families with income of over Rs1 lakh per annum are not eligible to get ration cards. However, many families availed of the benefit even though their income was above the fixed ceiling.

However, persistent appeals made by the state government have induced thousands of ineligible families to give up their ration cards since 2021.

According to the sources, if families which are obtaining subsidized food grains under the NFSA do not voluntarily surrender their ration cards soon, the Directorate of Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs will cancel their ration cards.

It may be mentioned that apart from the ration cards that have been voluntarily surrendered, the Directorate of Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs deleted 40 lakh names of ineligible beneficiaries from the ration card database till August last.
