648 Assam villages still without 4G services

Sentinel Digital Desk

Guwahati: There is good news for the 648 villages of Assam that still have no access to 4G mobile services. The highest number of such villages is located in the Karbi Anglong (170), Dima Hasao (102) and Golaghat (186) districts. According to sources, the main reasons for the lack of 4G services are remoteness, difficult terrain and BSNL's lack of 4G services.

However, a solution to the problem appears imminent as the Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a project worth Rs 26,316 crore for saturation of 4G mobile services across the country. Moreover, another welcome development is that the BSNL, which covers many of the villages without 4G mobile services, will introduce 4G services across the country from August 15.

The sources said that at present only 30 per cent of Assam's population have smart phones. According to official data collected in 2018, Assam had 10.25 million Internet users, but that number has increased to around 12 million now.

It is pertinent to mention that in 2018, as many as 2,503 villages of Assam had no access to mobile connectivity.
