73.38% voter turnout in bye poll to five Assam Assembly constituencies

An estimated 73.38 percent voter turnout was recorded in the bye elections to five assembly constituencies which was conducted on Saturday.

GUWAHATI: An estimated 73.38 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the bye elections to five assembly constituencies which was conducted on Saturday.

Polling was conducted with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

The highest voter turnout of 78 per cent was recorded in 41 Bhawanipur constituency followed by 28-Gossaingaon 77.37 per cent, 107-Thowra 75.07 per cent, 101-Mariani 69.81 per cent and 58-Tamulpur rerecorded 67.88 per cent of voting, according to the official figure of the Election commission of India (ECI).

However, the voters turn out may go up as the report of many polling stations are yet to be received by the CEO (Chief Electoral Officer). The voting was peaceful. No untoward incident has so far been reported from any part of the give assembly constituencies.

The fate of 31 candidates was sealed in the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) in 1,176 polling stations throughout five constituencies. Of the 31 candidates, eight each are in Gossaigaon and Bhabanipur; six in Tamulpur; four in Mariani; and five candidates in Thowra LAC.

Of the 7, 96,456 electors across the five LACs, the total male electorates are 4, 03,374; and 3, 93,078 females besides four transgenders.

Bye-election in Gossaigaon and Tamulpur were necessitated due to the death of the sitting MLAs, while the incumbents of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra resigned from their seats.
