GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) and the AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad) have formed a 16-member body – 'Assam Advisory Committee' – for the safety and security of the indigenous people of the State.
Disclosing this at a joint press conference here on Wednesday, leaders of both the organizations said that the committee has two advisers – former AXX (Axam Xahitya Xabha) president Dr Nagen Saikia and renowned writer Dr Arup Kumar Dutta. Other members of the committee are former Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Sekhar Mushahary, filmmaker of international repute Jahnu Barua, former GU professor Dr. Krishna Gopal Bhattacharya, former Associate Professor of Handique Girls' College Basanta Deka, Dhiren Saikia (Retd IAS), former Principal of SS College (Hailakandi) Ali Haider Lashkar, Rana Changmai, Abu Sahid Rafiquddin Ahmed, Sanjay Kumar Tanti, noted artiste Prithviraj Rabha, Surya Thaosen, Hussain Ahmed Laskar, Pranabjyoti Saikia and Pradip Koch. AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and his AJYCP counterpart Palash Changmai have been inducted into the committee as coordinators for preliminary works.
Addressing the media, AASU adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharya said, "The committee will plan, suggest measures and take steps to ensure a secure future for the indigenous people of Assam. The people of Assam have been victims of political injustice and economic exploitation since independence. The AASU, AJYCP and the people of Assam have been fighting against such injustice and exploitation over the years. During the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation a decision was taken to hold a national conference for taking the agitation forward. However, the corona-induced lockdown in the State prevented us from holding that conference. Now we've formed the 'Assam Advisory Committee' to ensure a secure future for the indigenous people of the State."
AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, "This committee will draw an educational, social, economic and political roadmap for the AASU and the AJYCP to move ahead. However, the AASU and the AJYCP will continue to keep their apolitical characters intact. After independence a number of governments came but ignored the burning issues of Assam. The AGP was floated in 1985 and it formed the first regional party government in the State. However, in 2016 it aligned with a national party at the cost of the faith which the people of the State had on it."
AJYCP president Rana Pratap Baruah said, "This advisory committee will hold discussions with intellectuals, social organizations and the people of the State to take decisions. We (AASU and AJYCP) will proceed in accordance with the decisions to be taken by the committee."
Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, "This committee has been formed to rid people of the chronic neglect they are being meted out, and for permanent solution to the problems afflicting the State."
Palash Changmai said, "All – the Congress, AGP and the BJP – have betrayed the people of Assam. This committee will moot measures for a secure future of the people of Assam."
