200 More ICU Beds in GMCH to Be Ready by Mid-June: Assam Health Minister

GUWAHATI: Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that an additional 200 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds are under construction at the parking area of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) would be ready by mid-June.

Talking to The Sentinel, the Health Minister said, "Once these additional 200 ICU beds are ready, we will have more facilities at the GMCH to treat COVID-19 patients. After the installation of the 200 additional ICU beds in the GMCH parking area, the main hospital in the GMCH will be slowly opened for general patients (other than COVID-19 patients)." Referring to the COVID-19 situation in the state, the Minister said that in the past few days there has been a "slight improvement" in the situation.

Giving an update on the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses available in the state, he said that the state has around 2.60 lakhs of doses of Covishield for the 45+ age group and there are 95,000 doses for those above 18 years. There are 10,000 doses of Covaxin to vaccinate people above 45 years and 1,800 doses for people above 18 years.

The Assam government is in constant touch with the Central government to get more doses of the vaccines, the Minister said.
