GUWAHATI: The government hospitals are still having adequate beds to treat COVID-19 patients even as the number of infected persons is fast rising in the State's capital city.

Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya told The Sentinel on Monday that around 200 beds, including those with ICU facility, are vacant at his hospital. He said since the GMCH is discharging recovered COVID patients almost every day vacant beds are created quite frequently.

Dr Baishya said the number of vacant beds as of Monday was 100 at Sarusojai COVID centre, 40 to 45 at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital and 50 to 55 at the Government Ayurvedic College at Jalukbari. He said additional beds will be created at Patanjali Yogpeeth at Mirza from Tuesday.

"We are expecting to create around 1,500 additional beds within a few days. Even though the situation is grim we are trying hard to do away with the problem of bed shortage as far as possible," he said.

Dr Baishya, however, said the GMCH has been receiving more critical patients who need oxygen and ventilation this time. "The rush of such critical patients was less in 2020. So, we have faced the challenge of treating more critical patients this time," he said.

On the other hand, 95% of the beds at private hospitals are now fully occupied.
