GUWAHATI: Till the time of filing of this report, at least 20 aftershocks of varying magnitudes from 2.3 to 4.7 in the Richter scale were felt in Assam after the major earthquake which jolted Assam at 7.51 am on Wednesday (April 28).

According to the statistics from the National Centre for Seismology, ten aftershocks were felt between 12.24 am and 7.14 pm on Thursday (April 29). Most of these shocks were felt in the Sonitpur region. The last aftershock measured 2.8 on the Richter scale.

A seismologist, while terming such aftershocks following the major earthquake which hit the State on April 28 as normal, said such shocks might be felt by the people for the next one month.

"After the massive earthquake in 1950, the aftershocks continued to hit Assam for more than a month. A similar situation might be experienced by the people this time. I only appeal to the people not to panic. Instead, they should remain calm and alert to prevent any eventuality. An earthquake cannot be predicted," the seismologist said.
