GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) which led the historic anti-foreigners' movement, has fixed 40 years as the age limit for its members to serve the organization.

The decision towards this end was taken following several amendments of the constitution of the historic students' organization during its ongoing 17th general conference at Duliajan town in Dibrugarh district on Saturday. As per the amendments, any AASU member or leader who crosses 40 years will have to retire from the organization.

As per other amendments, the term of the central executive committee of the AASU has been reduced to three years. After every three years, the general conference of the AASU will be held. One has to be a graduate to become a member of the executive committee. Another amendment was made to create the post of 'Chief Advisor' in AASU. The amendments of the AASU's constitution will come into force with effect from 2023.

During the ongoing Duliajan conference, majority of the AASU members are strongly opposing the retirement move of their chief advisor Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya.

Dr Bhattacharjya had earlier publicly declared that he would retire from the AASU during the Duliajan conference.

Dr Bhattacharjya told the media on Saturday, that he would take the final call on his retirement move later. "I am overwhelmed by emotions, respect and attachment shown to me by the AASU members. I will respect the sentiments of our members," said Dr Bhattacharjya.

A full-fledged central executive committee meeting will be held at Duliajan on Saturday night to select new president and general secretary of AASU.
